Bookish is a private book reader built around a simple idea: giving one good book your attention can matter more than collecting a hundred titles you may never open.
One book deserves one quiet place
Many reading products begin with abundance: larger libraries, longer lists, and more ways to discover something new. Bookish begins with attention. The One Book Rule allows a single PDF on your desk. To begin another, you finish or release the current book first.
This is not a judgment about how anyone should read. It is a practical boundary for readers who recognize the feeling of browsing more than reading. Bookish removes the library once a book is chosen, keeps your current page close, and gives you a calm place to return tomorrow.
What Bookish is designed to protect
Privacy
Your chosen PDF is processed and stored in this browser. The application does not require an account or upload the book to an application server.
Attention
One book, a short reading intention, and a focus timer create a clear next action without feeds, streak pressure, or social comparison.
Agency
You may finish a book or release it without guilt. Either decision clears the desk and makes room for a more deliberate next choice.
Restraint
Bookish is intentionally small. Features earn their place by helping you choose, read, understand, or return—not by increasing time spent in the app.
How the reading experience works
When the desk is empty, Bookish offers spoiler-free book recommendations from a catalogue of more than 1,000 titles. A premise, reading note, and genres appear before the title so you can respond to the book itself rather than its popularity.
You can also bring a PDF you already have the right to read. Bookish validates the file, opens it with PDF.js, remembers your page and reading intention, and provides zoom and keyboard page controls. Focus sessions of 25, 45, or 60 minutes help turn reading into time you can protect.
Local-first by design
Bookish is a static web application with no application backend, account system, or file-upload service. The current PDF and page progress use IndexedDB; timer state and small preferences use local browser storage. PDF rendering is loaded only when a book is opened.
Optional, consent-managed Google Analytics helps us understand website usage. It is not loaded unless you allow it, advertising features remain disabled, and it never receives your PDF, book title, reading intention, or saved progress. You can change this choice from the footer.
Local storage also creates limits: the book does not automatically sync to another browser or device, and clearing browser data may remove it. Those trade-offs are stated plainly because privacy is most useful when readers understand exactly where their data lives.
